Announcing “Freshly Squeezed,” my new comic strip

On September 20, my new comic strip, “Freshly Squeezed,” published by United Features Syndicate, will launch in daily newspapers. Those of you who followed my “Denver Square” feature in the Rocky Mountain News will recognize the characters, although they’ve been updated a bit. In the new strip, Irv and Sarah, Liz’s parents and Nate’s grandparents, have lost their retirement savings in the economic collapse, and have moved in with their grown children and their grandchild. That’s when the inter-generational fun begins.

According the the Pew Research Center, multi-generation families are growing rapidly, with 49 million Americans living in multi-generation homes as of 2008, largely as a result of economic trends, and that number is surely larger today. Folks over 65 are the most likely to live this way. In other words, the strip is relevant and timely. And well-drawn and funny, and emotionally honest, if I do say so myself.

Now, here’s what I’m asking of you, dear readers: if you’d like to see “Freshly Squeezed” in your local daily paper, call them and tell them about it. Ask who buys the comic strips (usually the managing editor or the features editor) and speak with that person directly. Tell them you’ve heard about this great new strip, and that they should carry it in their comics pages.

Here are a few samples from the early weeks of “Freshly Squeezed.” Enjoy.

Hey Ed! Congrats! It looks fabulous!

  2. Dave Barnes says:

My first reaction is: SEP20 WTF! Why the delay? And, then I thought: Oh, Old Media, Without a clue.
These strips should be available tomorrow.

My second reaction is: how do I get this strip online for $0.05/day (which is about what I pay to read a strip in a dead-tree medium)?

My third thought is: I love Denver Square.

  3. Barbara says:

Ed, I’ve missed these folks – they always felt like family. So glad that they’ll be back. Hope the Post picks it up!

  4. [...] This post was mentioned on Twitter by Aaron Templer, Ed Stein. Ed Stein said: New blog post: Announcing "Freshly Squeezed," my new comic strip http://bit.ly/amRcVP [...]

  5. Gerry Valerio says:

  9. [...] New Multi-Gen Comic Strip: Cartoonist Ed Stein will be launching a new comic strip on September 20th. The strip is called Freshly Squeezed and will be based on a multi-generational household. ”Can three generations of one family share their lives, their feelings, their dwindling fortune — and a bathroom?” Apparently these questions all get their humorous due. So far the Knoxville News Sentinel is scheduled to pick up Freshly Squeezed. Let us know if your paper starts to publish this new multi-gen gem.  See more of Freshly Squeezed here.   [...]

Congratulations … but would really love for the political commentary / cartoons that you so generously share via email and this blog … were carried in every paper in the nation… I have come to depend on them as a source of wry but reasoned wit in an increasingly wacky world.

  11. Donald the Duck says:

Great stuff, Ed. Your talent will get you going.

  12. Margaret Schmale says:

You just showed up in the Oregonian this October 2010. I have been down this road because my folks lived with us for 20 years. It was worth every minute. Our two daughters grew up with them and I hope someday to be able to repeat the experience. Having Grandparents live under the same roof is not for everyone, but for those that can; they should.

  13. Florence block says:

I love the 3 generations in one household. So very funny and TRUE!
But please for us “seniors” could you print the captions slightly larger.
The fonts seem smaller then other cartoons on same page of Palm Beach Post.
    Keep up the good work!
    Thanks
    florence

I’ve been looking at “Freshly Squeezed” for months in the Denver Post wondering why it was so familiar but had an unfamiliar name! I’m SO glad you’re back, although I’m STILL in mourning over the RMN. Goodluck to you!
