One of my favorite cartoonists has died. John Callahan, possibly the most originally irreverent man ever to put twisted pen to paper, passed away on Saturday from complications of  quadraplegia and respiratory problems. To say that nothing was off limits to Callahan was to shortchange his originality. Callahan sought out subjects that anyone else would find too hot to touch. For examples of his work, and a fine obituary, read this from the New York Times.

Even better, this tribute from the Washington Post:

“When people laugh like hell and then say, ‘That’s not funny’, you can be pretty sure they’re talking about John Callahan.”

Callahan is much missed and will be long remembered in Seattle. The line all boomers learned by heart growing up on an endless diet of Westerns, is now forever Callahan’s: “Don’t worry, he won’t get far on foot.”
