Christmas Carol

I’m no fan of Christmas shopping, but the last thing this struggling economy needed was a huge blizzard wiping out crucial shopping days in some of the largest markets in the country. It’s depressing to think that the only quick way out of this recession is for rampant consumerism to come roaring back. What I want for Christmas is for everyone to shop until they drop. And would it be too much to ask that you tell the storekeepers you saw their ads in the newspaper?

This takes to 24 December 1982 when we had that blizzard.
The week before, we were enjoying a late “Indian Summer” where temperatures were in the 60s and 70s and then on the morning of the 24th, there was already a foot of snow on the ground it was going to get worse through the day.
When it was all said and done, there was 3 feet on the ground and then it was followed by 3 weeks of cold, which broke the record set for the longest cold snap set in January 1979, when I was delivering the Rocky Mountain News in that snap.
When we got back to school after new year’s, most of us reported we all did the same thing Christmas Break. Living in Capitol Hill and having the cars parked in the back on the alley did not help for those of us who lived on the middle of the block. Not only did I have to dig out the driveway, I had to shovel out the alley so that we could get onto 13th Avenue between Josephine and York.
Hopefully it isn’t too cold this time around.
