My first sketch for this cartoon had the health care bill as an adult with an arm and a leg already cut off, hobbling from the House surgical unit to the Senate surgical unit. In some ways it may have been more accurate, given how butchered the plan already is, and how much more will be sacrificed before a bill acceptable to enough to our skittish lawmakers can pass both houses in congress. I finally decided that this was the better approach; after all, it is a major achievement just to get any health care reform bill passed in the House. It’s never happened before, and whatever emerges from the sausage factory that we call Congress will be far better than the broken health care system we have now, even if it needs major repairs later.

Hilarious, Ed. That last sentence in the monologue absolutely cracks me up.

  2. Don Johnson says:

Right on, Ed! Rush that baby to surgery because it is one sick bill!

    • Jerry Brammer says:

Why is it so sick about it, Don? I got a fairly deteailed letter from AARP yesterday detailing why they think it is a good thing and they are backing it. Do they have some motivation I’m overlooking?

      • Don Johnson says:

My wife and I cut up our AARP cards and cancelled our membership about six weeks ago. I don’t know what their motivation is but you can bet it has to do with money and a deal.

I can’t begin to name all the things in this bill that is sick, but I’ll name a few: public option, forcing young people to purchase insurance to help pay for old f_ _ts like myself, govenment forcing a citizen to purchase anything is ridiculous and then fining them if they don’t, is even worse. I could go on, but that is enough for a starter.

        • Jerry Brammer says:

Don, I’m boggled by these ideas?

Public option – I guess you don’t care for Medicare?
Forcing young people to pay to help pay for old farts – I guess you don’t like Social Security? P.S. They are already doing that thru FICA.
Government forcing a citizen to purchase anything – I guess you don’t care for auto insurance laws.
Fining them if they don’t is even worse – How could you enforce anything if there was no recourse. Besides, there are hundreds of things that folks get fined for not getting (purchasing), like a drivers license or paying their child support.

Seriously though, I truly do not understand the argument that everyone should not be required to purchase health insurance. If you don’t and you get sick or injured, the rest of us will have to pay to give you care. Is that right? If you can’t afford it, then there is a subsidy so not buying it means what? F*** the rest of us?

Re: AARP – if it is for money and a deal, then that is good old U.S. capitalism at its best. What’s the problem here? Capitalism and Greed or a Socialist Government?

I hope Santa can help President Obama. Maybe he will bring some peace to the warring Republicans and remind them that no matter who was President he would have had this mess to deal with that they created.
