Aronson Award Goes to Stein

What better way to celebrate National Cartoonists Day than to announce that I’ve been selected to receive the James Aronson Award for Social Justice Journalism in the editorial cartoon category. The award is administered by the Hunter College Department of Film and Media Studies in New York. The honorees include:

Career Achievement Award to Les Payne

 ”Don’t pull your punches, tell the truth and duck.”  — Les Payne

During his 28 years at NY Newsday, Les Payne worked as an associate editor, local and national reporter, foreign correspondent and columnist. He shared a Pulitzer Prize for detailing the heroin trail from Turkey to the United States and was a founder and former president of the National Association of Black Journalists.

EJ Graff, Foreign Policy 108, 106: “The Lie We Love,” for exposing corruption in international adoptions and highlighting international efforts to deter illegal practices.

Joseph Huff-Hannon, The Indypendent: “Facing Foreclosure: Brooklyn Retiree on Verge of Losing Home as Sub-prime Lenders Target Cash-Poor Black Seniors,” for a local view of a national crisis.

Nick Turse, The Nation, and to Kevin Buckley, who did original reporting for Newsweek in the 1970′s: “A My Lai a Month,” for detailing that the My Lai massacre was not an exception and for documenting government efforts to stall investigation and media coverage.

Cartooning with a Conscience to Ed Stein
For the range of his work in 2008 on the economy, torture and other crucial issues and the beauty of his graphic work. Former editorial cartoonist (since 1978) for the now defunct Rocky Mountain News; now syndicated by United Media. Past president of the Association of Editorial Cartoonists.
