By now you’ve probably heard about the group of former Rocky journalists who are starting up a web-only newspaper, InDenverTimes.com. Well, I’m one of those ink-stained wretches who believes that the only way that important, well-written, properly vetted and edited journalism, the kind of journalism that a free democratic society absolutely needs to remain vibrant, can survive is if people are willing to pay for the content. It wasn’t always free, folks. You had to shell out a quarter or pay for home delivery if you wanted a newspaper. Then the geniuses who ran this business aground decided to give it away on the web. That model is no longer sustainable. I invite you to go to the website and subscribe. For a measly $5 a month, you’ll get the same sparkling journalism you were accustomed to when the Rocky was still being published, and I’ll be there.
Here’s the deal. If the project succeeds, I’ll be able to bring back my Denver Square comic strip, and this will be the only newspaper you’ll be able to read it in.
So, subscribe. And tell everyone you know to sign up. Give it as gift. Buy one for every computer in the house. Subscribe at work. You get the idea.
